September is Life Insurance Awareness Month, commonly known as "LIAM", and it marks the month where we add an extra focus, shine the light a little brighter, on the need to have life insurance. Yes, I understand that life insurance is not mandatory, but it should be. If you think about it, we are required to carry auto insurance because we are liable if we injure another person while driving, but we are not liable to carry life insurance to protect our loved ones... where is the logic on that, right?
Call me old school, I guess, but I'm a believer that no one else should be responsible for your loved ones financial situation if something unexpected were to happen to you. Or that your loved ones should be asking friends and family for your burial expenses... Come one, you had the time to plan all those details while you were alive, but life got in the way, and you procrastinated. Easy way out... Alright...off my soapbox.
In all seriousness, plan people, just plan. You don't have to start with a huge $1M policy, but start with what you can afford and work your way up. To start, start by protecting your income. Statistically, the death of a loved one is the main cause for foreclosures on a house, file for bankruptcy, or having to move with a family member because the ones left behind can't afford it. Then, look into Mortgage Protection. Have your house paid off if something were to happen to you...
